What You Need to Know Before Rhinoplasty
  1. Rhinoplasties are carried out with general anaesthesia.
  2. These surgeries should be performed by a surgeon in a hospital environment.
  3. Persons over 18 years old can undergo these surgeries since these are plastic surgeries which are performed after the developmental period.
  4. You need to be on empty stomach on the date of operation since it requires a general anaesthesia. You will be informed of the period of time during which you should avoid eating by your anaesthesiologist and plastic surgeon.
  5. The surgery takes between 1,5 to 3 hours.
  6. It's required that your medical health screening, as well as your tests which are related to your surgery, are performed by the anaesthesiologist before the operation.
  7. Health issues such as flu, cold etc before the operation are obstructions to the surgery.
  8. In case you are on a medication, you should inform your doctor of such medication during your examination. You should also inform your anaesthesiologist of such medication during your examination for anaesthesia. If you note down beforehand the medication you are on, you will not forget to tell any of them during the examination.
  9. You are required to avoid anticoagulant foods and drugs such as aspirin.
  10. You are required to avoid anticoagulant drugs such as aspirin for 10 days prior to the operation.
  11. Even if it's a rare case, herbal teas can increase the bleeding. Therefore, you should avoid drinking herbal teas for one week prior to your operation.
  12. Menstrual periods are not medical obstructions to the surgery.
  13. You are required to quit smoking before the operation. Smoking delays the recovery period. The period after the operation is painless in general. People who have pain are prescribed analgesics. After the operation, your nose will be blocked for about 2 days since you had a surgery in your nose. Your throat will get dry since you will breathe through your mouth owing to such blockage. The operating room is hygienic. Therefore, you are made to wear a protective garment before you undergo surgery. This protective garment is important for hygiene.
  14. DO INFORM your doctor in case you previously had a surgery in your nose.
  15. Many of the patients give incomplete information to the doctors since their second nose surgery is performed after 6 months, whereas it's performed even after 9 months in some cases. Share everything completely with your doctor before the operation. Don't forget that a matter which is insignificant to you can be very important for your surgery. Open and closed rhinoplasty techniques are used in surgeries. It's your doctor's choice which will determine the technique to be used. What matters for you is the fact that a beautiful and healthy rhinoplasty will be performed regardless of the technique to be used.
  16. After the operation, you will have a plaster cast on your nose. This will be removed 7 days after your surgery. You shouldn't remove the plaster cast yourself. It will be removed by the Maya Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon.
  17. Bruises and swellings may occur under eyes following the surgery. These bruises and swellings heal within 3 to 4 days.
  18. Swellings occur due to the oedema which develops around your nose following the surgery. These swellings become smaller in the first 6 months. They disappear completely between 6 months to 12 months. These swellings can only be noticed by the persons who know that you have undergone surgery, as well as by yourself, your doctor and others who have previously undergone rhinoplasty. You can find detailed information about bruises and swellings in our section titled "what you need to know after the surgery".
  19. There is a patient consent form for rhinoplasty as is for any surgery. The Patient Consent Form is an information form which gives detailed written information regarding your surgery, as well as the information verbally provided for you during the examination by your doctor and anaesthesiologist. This form is made signed by patients to undergo surgery prior to each operation. It's in force for every hospital and every doctor.
  20. We suggest you chose a positive person as your accompanist on the date of your operation.
